Important Deadlines

​June 1st:

  • Youth must have controlling ownership of the horse and information uploaded to 4-H Online

  • Youth Horse Literacy must be complete​

Important Info for Horse Project in 4-H

  • Any breed of horse or breed combination are acceptable

  • Geldings and mares of any age are acceptable

  • Stallions over 8 years of age may not be exhibited

  • 4-H member may register as any many as they wish

    • Only 3 horses can be used at State Horse Show​

  • A driving team will count as one horse for entry purposes​

Hippology

Hippology is a team event. 4-H members exhibit their knowledge and understanding of equine science and husbandry in a friendly but competitive setting . 

 

4 Phases of Hippology​

  • Examination - written exam

  • Station - station has requirements that members must complete

  • Judging - members place at least two classes of horses

  • Team problems - teams must discuss the problem and give an oral presentation on their solution

Horse Judging Contest

Horse judging provides a foundation for evaluating horses . It is the base for developing qualified judges all while promoting confidence in decision making skills and public speaking.

Judging teams can have a max of 4 members, either from the same county or a combination thereof. 

 

Horse Judging Components

Beginner: 2 halter classes, one set of questions and 25 point parts ID

Junior: 4 classes, one set of questions and give one set of oral reasons

Senior: 4 classes, one set of questions and give two sets of oral reasons

Horse Quiz Bowl

Quiz Bowl tests members on their equine-related knowledge. Quiz bowl is open to all 4-Hers, even those who don't own a horse.

Quiz bowl teams must have a minimum of 3 members and a no more than 5 members, either from one county or a combination thereof. If a team only has 3 members, they can not compete in the fourth or eighth question, and not eligible for the team bonus.

Types of Questions

One-on-one - only individual contestants can answer

Toss-Up - any contestant can answer and if answered correctly, a bonus question will be asked

Bonus - given to the team, who's contestant answered the toss-up correctly, the team can confer before answering, but only one team member can answer

Horse Demonstration & Public Speaking

Demonstration & Public Speaking lets members showcase their knowledge of the horse industry, while improving their communication, organization skills and confidence.

All demonstrations & speeches be horse related.

 

Demonstrations​

  • Presentations can be done individually or as a team

  • Members must themselves by name, state and presentation topic.

  • Presentations must be between 10-15 minutes.

  • Visual aids can be used.

Public Speaking

  • Speeches must be down individually.

  • No visual aides are allowed.

  • Members must themselves by name, state and presentation topic.​

  • Presentations must be between 7 - 10 minutes.
